The long sought after closure of the U.S. Army Reserve Facility on the Delaware River in Marcus Hook began to take shape in 1999 and the facility was closed in early 2000. The date of the conveyance deed to Marcus Hook Borough, was October 2, 2000. Major General Thomas J. Plewes, Chief of the Army Reserve, and U.S. Representative Curt Weldon, former Mayor of Marcus Hook, presented Borough Offices with the deed to the 1.7 acre property. The on-site structure was first built in 1956 to serve as federal quarantine station and operated by the United States Public Health Service. It last served as an Army Reserve facility for Detachment 1 of the 949th Transportation Company. In 2000, Detachment 1 was permanently relocated to the home of its parent unit, in Curtis Bay, Maryland. Making this happen was Congressman Curt Weldon.
On December 1, 2003, Borough Council awarded construction contracts to advance plans to rehabilitate this building for use as a multi-purpose community center. Interior construction activities included new rest rooms, kitchen area, community meeting rooms, safety code compliance improvements and related restoration. Two additions to the building were also constructed. A main entrance on the west side of the Building, a new entry foyer and elevator. On the river side, a sun room/sitting area for senior citizens. Exterior improvements included replacing the driveway, curbing and sidewalks, landscaping.
The Marcus Hook Community Center was originally dedicated on October 23, 2004. Recently, it has been closed to the public as it was used as a temporary location for the Marcus Hook Police Department, while their building was under renovation. The building is now home of the Marcus Hook Senior Citizens organization. Their meetings, programs, and activities are held on the ground floor of the building. The large first floor social room is also used for Borough special events, as well as Recreation and Park Board programming such as the Children’s Holiday Party, Crafts, Bingo, and other similar activities. On the second floor is our computer room and fitness center.
