MARCUS HOOK TO CELEBRATE MEMORIAL DAY
WITH GALA PARADE

 

Marcus Hook, PA, May 20, 2022.  Military units, string bands, drum teams, antique cars, civic groups, fire companies, and others will grace the streets of Marcus Hook Borough on Saturday, May 28, 2022 as the Borough celebrates Memorial Day in grand style.  The annual Marcus Hook Memorial Day Parade will begin at 12:00 Noon starting on 10th Street at the Marcus Hook Trainer line. At Market Street the parade will head south and conclude at Market Square Memorial Park, the Borough’s beautiful waterfront park.

 

The parade will feature a number of marching bands, musical groups, and organizations including the Corvette Club of Media Ferko String Band, Trinidad North Steel Band, Avalon String Band, Media Dixies, Lulu Shriners, Valley Forge Highlanders, Verdi Marching Band, South Philadelphia String Band, Dixie Express, West Powelton Steppers – official 76ers drum team, Quaker City String Band, and of course Uncle Sam and the Statue of Liberty, along with many other civic and community groups.  Kids are also invited to participate in this year's parade by decorating their bikes or scooters and following along the parade route, any kids who participate in the parade with their decorated bike or scooter will receive a free Georgeo's Italian Water Ice at the conclusion of the parade.  Sign-ups for kids who will be participating with their bikes or scooters will take place at Haebel Plaza (10th and Plaza Streets) before the start of the parade.

 

Glen Loy will be serving as Grand Marshal in this year’s parade. Glen served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1968 – 1974, and was stationed in Thailand in 1971 and 1972 where he was a member of the 635th Security Police Squadron for a B-52 launching point.  Glen was awarded the Vietnam Commendation Medal with one Battle Star, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Vietnam Service Medal.  Glen lived in the Borough of Marcus Hook from 1962 – 1968, was a member of the second to last class to graduate from Marcus Hook Junior High, and currently resides in Chester County.  Glen was a founding member of Delco Company, which traced the names of 177 Vietnam War casualties from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. and brought them, over a week-long, 125 mile march to Marcus Hook in 1988, where these tracings remain buried behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Market Square Memorial Park.

 

Following the parade the Vietnam Veterans of Delaware County, Chapter 67, will hold a memorial service at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Market Square Memorial Park.
