Arbor Day in Marcus Hook - April 28, 2023
Arbor Day in Marcus Hook - April 28, 2023
On Friday, April 28, 2023 the Borough of Marcus Hook hosted Arbor Day, a day in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees! Started in Nebraska in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, the Borough has celebrated Arbor Day for over three decades and has been recognized as a Tree City USA member for the past 38 years. On Friday, the Borough gathered in the gymnasium of Marcus Hook Elementary School. We were joined by the Marcus Hook Elementary School 3rd and 4th Grade classes. The 4th grade class preformed "Brighter than the sun" and thanks to Bruce Dorbian and guest speaker Julianne Schieffer, an Extension Urban Forester from Penn State Ecosystem Science and management, we learned a little bit about Arbor Day and just how important trees are. A Hawthorne (Crataegus) Tree was previously planted in front of our Community Center in honor of Arbor Day.
Thank you to all who attended and made the Arbor Day Program possible! The Borough would like to offer a special thank you to the Marcus Hook Elementary 3rd and 4th grade classes, Principal Susan Gavigan, Music Teacher Elizabeth Salamone, Extension Urban Forester Julianne Schieffer, Bruce Dorbian the Director of Planning and Development, Borough Manager Greg Grillone, Council President Josephine Laird, Councilman John Johnson, Chief John Ireland, Officer James Dalrymple, Officer Claire Burkert, Code Enforcement Officer and Highway Foreman Bobby Hughes and finally to our Borough Highway Department for planting our new tree!
